How to choose a FPV goggle | Introduction to FPV drone for beginner
Here is a summary of the basic information for choosing a FPV goggle for Tiny Whoop / FPV drone for beginners.Choose FPV goggles
Microdrone video transmitters (VTXs) typically transmit video at one of the following frequencies. The frequency to be transmitted is selected using the drone setting function.Electrically, it's just a video receiver, so if you prepare multiple goggles and tune them to the same channel, you can enjoy the flight image of one drone with multiple people. There is no need to pairing work with drone's VTX (excluding some digital types).
Note:
Since the channel frequencies of FPV signals are adjacent to each other, using "scan" or "search" function may set a different channel than drone's transmission settings. Use the channel specification function of FPV goggles as much as possible.
If you need glasses
The distance from your eyes to the screen when wearing FPV goggles is about 10 cm (4 in). If you cannot see the screen of a smartphone placed at a distance of about 10 cm, you will need to use reading glasses. If you need glasses, try box-shaped goggles like the one in the picture. Reading glasses can also be purchased at one dollar stores. First of all, please try the one with a magnification of +1.5 to +2.5.Receiver and antenna
Antennas come in a variety of shapes and can be replaced and used as long as the connector type matches. There are multiple types of antenna connectors, such as SMA, RP-SMA, U.FL(IPEX/IPX) and MMCX, so be careful when purchasing.Video receivers (RX) and antennas are sold separately for high-end models. Select the receiver and antenna that can be attached to the selected goggles.
For more information, see Knowledge of Tiny Whoop antennas .
Display resolution
The display resolution of FPV goggles is only about 800x480 pixels for beginners and about 1280x960 pixels for high-end models, which is lower than recent smartphones. However, in general, the resolution of camera mounted on FPV drone is about 600TVL to 800TVL for horizontal scanning line, so it can be said that 800 pixels in vertical direction is sufficient for resolution of FPV goggles.DVR function
DVR (Digital video recorder) function can record the video displayed on the goggles. Normally, insert the micro SD card into the goggles and press the record button on the goggles to start recording. Not only will you enjoy the flight later, but you can also use it to pinpoint the location of the crash if you crash outdoors and the drone goes missing. Goggles that normally have a DVR function also have a Playback function.Battery
Depending on model, it may be necessary to prepare a battery separately. FPV goggles consume power, so if you have a model that can use an external battery, you can enjoy flight for a long time by preparing a replacement battery or a large capacity battery.HDMI input connector
Some models have an HDMI input connector. So it is suitable for use with computer simulator screens and digital receivers such as HDZero and Walksnail Avatar connected via HDMI cable.Digital VTX VS Analog VTX
VTXs for drones usually transmit analog video signals in NTSC / PAL format, but recently there are products that transmit their own digital signals. Digital VTX provides a clear view with very little noise, but you can't see it with normal analog FPV goggles. Pay attention to the VTX specifications when purchasing a drone. In digital VTX systems, the camera and VTX are sometimes collectively called the "Air Unit."
Digital VTX systems currently on the market include "DJI Digital FPV System", "HDZero" and "Walksnail Avatar". They are not compatible with each other, so each requires its own goggles/VRX (receiver). For more information, please refer to Digital FPV system for FPV drone/How to use digital FPV goggles / Walksnail Avatar HD/HDZero/DJI Digital FPV system .
How to substitute VR goggles for smartphones
If you have an Android smartphone that can connect to OTG, you can also use inexpensive VR goggles (Amazon.com) for smartphones by connecting EACHINE ROTG01 FPV receiver (Amazon.com) .Note that iPhone series does not have the ability to display external video input, so such accessories are not manufactured either.
How to substitute with TV
With a product called RC-HD Video Receiver (HDMI output) (Amazon.com) or RC832 Video Receiver (RCA output) (Amazon.com) , you can display FPV image of drone on a TV or PC display. This is convenient when you want to enjoy FPV images of drone racing with a large number of people and perform drone maintenance. FPV drone controlling with TV is like a video game or simulator.
