How to use the Thrustmaster TFRP (T.Flight Rudder Pedals) rudder pedals

There are accessories available for sale that allow you to operate an aircraft's rudder with your feet, just like in a real cockpit. Using these allows for more precise rudder control. Rudder control is particularly important when flying rotorcraft (helicopters, MV-22 Osprey, e.t.c.).
This article will show you how to use the TFRP (T.Flight Rudder Pedals) rudder pedals sold by Thrustmaster with Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Introducing the Thrustmaster TFRP(T.Flight Rudder Pedals)

PC It comes in a box like this. The size is about 34.5 x 31.5 x 20.5cm, so it's a fairly large box.
We recommend that you first read the TFRP Rudder Pedal User's Manual (PDF: Multilingual) that can be downloaded from the official website.
Below are some official related pages for this product. We recommend that you check these pages as well.
PC Here's a photo of what's included. The pedal itself, a quick start guide (in multiple languages), instructions for using it with PS4 (in Japanese), an Allen key (hex nut) for removing the "removable heel-rests" attached to the heel, and an RJ12-USB adapter. If you use your toes to operate the pedals, you'll find it easier to operate if you remove the "removable heel-rests".
PC View from the back. There is a serial number sticker attached. Most of the material is plastic, but the rails are metal.
PC The Rudder Pedals cable has a special connector called an RJ12. You can connect it directly to a Thrustmaster stick and daisy-chain it with other controllers. Then, all Thrustmaster accessories will be recognized by your computer as a single USB accessory.
If you want to connect the Rudder Pedals directly to your computer, such as when using it with sticks from other manufacturers, use the included RJ12-USB adapter.
PC This is a photo of an RJ12-USB adapter. On one end there is a USB Type-A connector, which can be connected to a USB port on a computer.
If you are using it with a flight simulator, flip the selector switch to the "AIRPLANE" (airplane icon) side. Then, first install the driver software on your computer. Next, connect the pedal's RJ12 cable to the adapter. Finally, connect the adapter to the USB connector on your computer.
When it is successfully connected to the computer, the LED lamp will turn green.
PC This pedal can stand on its own when placed upright, so you can store it away under a desk or somewhere else when not in use.
PC The size of the pedals is as shown in the photo. The model's foot size is 24.5cm.
The feel of the controls is neither too heavy nor too light, and is very good. Compared to using a joystick or XBOX controller, the rudder can be controlled much smoother.
PC In addition to sliding forward and backward (Z-axis: linked left and right), the pedals have a total of three analog axes, up and down directions of each pedal (X and Y axes: left and right independent). In MSFS, the Z-axis is assigned to the rudder by default, and the X and Y-axes are assigned to the brakes.

Download and install drivers

Before connecting the TFRP Rudder Pedals to your computer, first install the driver on your computer.
PC Drivers for Windows computers can be downloaded from Thrustmaster's product support page .
Click on "Drivers - Package..." to download an executable file named "2024_TFHT_1.exe" or similar.
Attention: Always download from Thrustmaster's official website. Downloads distributed from anywhere else may contain viruses.
PC Click the downloaded executable file to begin installing the driver. Click [Next].
PC Next is the software license agreement confirmation screen. Check the contents, select "I accept the...", and click [Next].
PC Next is the screen for selecting the installation folder. There is no need to change anything. Click [Next].
PC When you see a screen like this, you're ready to install. Click [Install].
PC The installation will be completed in a few seconds and you will see a screen like this. Click [Finish] to exit the installer.
Now connect the TFRP Rudder Pedals to your computer. When connecting, take your feet off the pedals and connect them with the pedals in the center position. When connected to a computer with a USB cable, the LED light on the RJ12-USB adapter should light up green.

Check that it works

PC Let's check whether the TFRP Rudder Pedals are correctly recognized by Windows and check that they are working properly. In Windows, click [Start]-[All]-[Thrustmaster TM Flight Series] and then click "Control Panel".
In addition, a program called "Firmware Update" is also installed under [Thrustmaster TM Flight Series], but it cannot be used with TFRP Rudder Pedals. It appears that the TFRP Rudder Pedals do not have built-in firmware.
PC You'll see a screen like this. If the TFRP Rudder Pedals are connected correctly, a device called "T-Rudder" will be displayed. Make sure it says "OK" here.
PC Click "T-Rudder" on the screen above and then click "Properties" at the bottom right of the screen to see the screen shown on the right. When you slide the pedal back and forth, the Z-axis graph should react, and when you press the left and right pedals up and down, the X and Y-axis markers should react. You're now ready to fly.

Setting the Deadzone

The "ADVANCED CALIBRATION SOFTWARE" provided by Thrustmaster allows you to set deadzones (non-responsive areas).
The settings are stored in the memory inside the RJ12-USB adapter. It cannot be used in an environment where the RJ12-USB adapter is not used.
PC "ADVANCED CALIBRATION SOFTWARE" for Windows computers can be downloaded from Thrustmaster's product support page .
Click on "ADVANCED CALIBRATION SOFTWARE..." to download an executable file named "T.RJ12_USB_TPR_Calibration_Tool(V2.12).exe" or similar.
Attention: Always download from Thrustmaster's official website. Downloads distributed from anywhere else may contain viruses.
PC This tool does not require installation. Once downloaded, click on the executable file and the tool will launch immediately.
When you start it up, you will see the screen on the right. Connect the TFRP Rudder Pedals to your computer via an RJ12-USB adapter.
PC When the TFRP Rudder Pedals are recognized, the screen on the right will appear. Immediately after connection, the rudder value in the center of the screen will fluctuate greatly. The Rudder Pedals are automatically calibrated by first moving the pedals back and forth to their maximum positions. When playing a game, you should also first move the pedals back and forth to their maximum positions.
PC When you move the pedal back and forth and up and down to its maximum position, it is calibrated and the output value settles as shown here.
If the output value fluctuates even after automatic calibration has been completed, or if you want to narrow the pedal's response range, set the deadzone.
PC You can narrow the range of the maximum and minimum values by dragging the orange triangle marks on each axis up and down. You can set the median no-response region by dragging the blue triangle marks up and down. Once you have determined the range, click the [Apply] button at the bottom right of the screen.
PC You'll then see a screen like this. When you remove the RJ12-USB adapter from your computer, the deadzone you set will be saved to the adapter.

Checking the Controller Settings in MSFS

For information on how to use the MSFS controller settings screen, please see the Useful settings for Microsoft Flight Simulator .

MSFS2024

PC The Z axis of the TFRP Rudder Pedals is assigned as the rudder axis.
PC The X and Y axes of the TFRP Rudder Pedals are assigned as the left and right brakes.

MSFS2020

PC The default settings are the same as MSFS2024. The Z axis of the TFRP Rudder Pedals is assigned as the rudder axis. The X and Y axes of the TFRP Rudder Pedals are assigned as the left and right brakes.

Controller for flight simulator

Flight simulators can be operated using a keyboard, mouse, or game controller, but they are difficult to operate and the experience is completely different from the feeling of actually flying an airplane. To enjoy a more intuitive and realistic control feeling, a dedicated controller is required.
